Tanzania is home to the Serengeti's endless plains, the self-contained wildlife amphitheatre of the Ngorongoro Crater, and the continent's highest peak — all within a single, well-connected Northern Circuit. It's the setting for the Great Migration, one of the last places to reliably spot black rhino, and a country where a genuine safari, a mountain climb, and a beach holiday can all be part of the same trip.

Most of our itineraries focus on the Northern Circuit — Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara — because it offers the highest concentration of wildlife and the most efficient routing for the time you have. From there, Zanzibar is a short flight away, and Kilimanjaro rises practically at the circuit's doorstep.

When is the best time to go on a Tanzania safari?
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the dry months from June to October offer the clearest game viewing, as animals gather around remaining water sources. The Great Migration's dramatic Mara River crossings happen roughly July to October in the northern Serengeti, while the southern Serengeti's calving season runs January to March. The long rains, typically March to May, are quieter and more affordable, with lush green scenery in exchange for muddier roads.
Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?
Most nationalities need a visa to enter Tanzania, available either online in advance or on arrival at major airports and border crossings. Requirements and fees vary by nationality and do change from time to time, so we always recommend checking the current rules with the Tanzanian immigration authorities or your nearest embassy before you travel.
What vaccinations or health precautions do I need?
Requirements vary depending on your home country and travel history, so this is genuinely a conversation to have with your doctor or a travel health clinic well before departure — ideally four to six weeks out. Many travellers to Tanzania take precautions against malaria, and a yellow fever certificate is required if you're arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
What should I pack for a Tanzania safari?
Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige) works best for blending into the bush, along with a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings, especially at higher altitude locations like the Ngorongoro Crater rim. A good hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a decent pair of binoculars round out the essentials. Most camps offer laundry service, so you can pack lighter than you might expect.
Is Tanzania safe for tourists?
Tanzania is one of the more politically stable countries in East Africa and welcomes a large number of tourists safely every year. As with travel anywhere, ordinary common-sense precautions apply — secure your valuables, follow your guide's instructions in the parks, and keep an eye on your government's current travel advisories for Tanzania before you go.
What currency should I bring, and can I use credit cards?
The Tanzanian shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted for safari and lodge payments, particularly for park fees. Most lodges and larger operators accept credit cards, though a reliable connection isn't always guaranteed in remote areas, so it's worth carrying some cash — in small, undamaged bills — for tips and incidental purchases.
How many days do I need for a good safari?
A minimum of 4 to 5 days lets you properly experience the Northern Circuit's highlights — typically Tarangire, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater — without feeling rushed. A week or more gives you room to add Lake Manyara, go deeper into the Serengeti's different regions, or combine your safari with Zanzibar or a Kilimanjaro climb.
Can I combine a safari with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?
Yes — it's one of the most popular ways to build a Tanzania trip. Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha and works well as a relaxing finale after a safari, while a Kilimanjaro climb can be scheduled either before or after your game drives. What's the difference between budget, mid-range, and luxury safaris?
The core experience — the guiding, the game drives, the parks themselves — is largely the same across all three; the difference comes down to accommodation and comfort. Budget and mid-range camps offer comfortable, well-run tented or lodge stays with shared or ensuite facilities, while luxury properties add larger suites, higher-end dining, and extra touches like private plunge pools or butler service.
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend it. Good travel insurance for a Tanzania safari should cover trip cancellation, medical treatment, and emergency evacuation, since medical facilities in remote safari areas are limited and evacuation to a major hospital is sometimes necessary. Check that your policy explicitly covers safari activities and any add-ons like a Kilimanjaro climb.
