The Northern Circuit
Lake Natron
Located in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya, Lake Natron is one of Africa’s most fascinating natural wonders. Known for its striking red and pink hues caused by high salt concentrations and microscopic algae, this shallow soda lake is both beautiful and mysterious. It spans an area of approximately 1,040 square kilometers, sitting at the base of the towering Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano revered as sacred by the Maasai people.
Lake Natron is not only a visual spectacle but also an ecological treasure. It serves as a critical breeding ground for over 2.5 million lesser flamingos, making it one of the most significant flamingo sanctuaries in the world. Despite its harsh environment, characterized by high alkalinity and temperatures, this unique ecosystem supports life in remarkable ways, offering a surreal experience for adventurers and nature lovers alike.
Meaning of the Name
The name “Natron” originates from the high concentrations of natron salts found in the lake. Natron, a naturally occurring compound of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate, is responsible for the lake’s extreme alkalinity, which can reach a pH of 10.5. The Maasai people refer to the lake as “Enkai Nanyuki,” meaning “The Flamingo Lake,” reflecting its importance as a habitat for flamingos and its cultural significance.
Top Activities in Lake Natron
Flamingo Watching
Lake Natron is a globally significant breeding site for lesser flamingos. These birds thrive on the lake’s cyanobacteria, whose growth is fueled by the salty, alkaline waters. Visitors can witness thousands of flamingos creating an awe-inspiring spectacle, particularly during the breeding season.
Hiking to Ol Doinyo Lengai
Hiking to Ol Doinyo Lengai
Known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano offering a challenging yet rewarding hike. Climbing this sacred mountain provides stunning views of Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley, along with a glimpse into Maasai spirituality.
Exploring Waterfalls and Natural Pools
Hiking to the nearby Engare Sero Waterfalls is a refreshing adventure. The trail leads through rugged landscapes, eventually revealing a cool oasis where visitors can swim in crystal-clear pools surrounded by lush greenery.
Birdwatching and Nature Walks

The Best Time to Visit Serengeti Month by Month Guide
1. Dry Season (June to October)
The dry season is the best time for flamingo watching as the birds congregate for breeding.
Trails for hiking and exploring waterfalls are more accessible during this period.
Clear skies provide spectacular views of the lake, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the surrounding landscapes.
2. Wet Season (November to May)
Although rain may make trails slippery, the wet season transforms the area into a lush, green environment perfect for photography.
The presence of migratory birds enhances birdwatching opportunities.
Adventurous visitors might enjoy the challenge of climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai in cooler conditions.
