Itinerary Summary

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Welcome to Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by a representative from Safari Peak Adventures and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Your mountain guide will meet you for a full briefing and equipment check, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the climb ahead. The evening is free for rest or exploring Arusha’s charming local cafés and markets.

  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for registration. Begin your trek through the lush rainforest, alive with colobus monkeys, birds, and towering ferns. The trail gradually ascends to Mandara Hut, your home for the night. Enjoy dinner and rest in the cozy hut while soaking in the serene forest atmosphere.

  • Hiking time: 6–8 hours
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Habitat: Moorland

Leave the rainforest and enter moorland terrain with giant lobelias and heathers. Hike steadily, enjoying panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut by afternoon, where you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight in a comfortable mountain hut designed for trekkers.

  • Activity: Light hike & rest
  • Habitat: Moorland

Spend the day at Horombo Hut to acclimatize. Take a moderate hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980m) and admire the spectacular views of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Return to Horombo Hut for lunch, relaxation, and dinner. This day helps your body adjust to higher altitudes, ensuring a higher chance of summit success.

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Ascend across the alpine desert to Kibo Hut, located at the base of Kibo Peak. This barren yet dramatic landscape highlights Kilimanjaro’s volcanic origins. Rest in the hut, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit climb. Early bedtime is essential for energy conservation.

  • Hiking time: 10–14 hours total
  • Distance: 22 km
  • Habitat: Arctic & Moorland

Summit day begins around midnight. Trek through the cold, starry alpine desert to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Take photos, celebrate, and then descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
